Racial Battle Fatigue: The Toll of Policing Black Students

Researchers found that Black adolescents who were stopped by police at school or witnessed someone being stopped experienced the greatest depressive symptoms. Capturing the witnessing aspects of students’ experiences reveals the important, and often underappreciated, toll of vicarious or secondary stress (and trauma) from watching, witnessing, or listening to the experiences of others, especially if there is shared identity.
